Whether you are in college now, just starting, or graduated with no idea what to do next, deciding on a career path is a difficult choice to make. With so many options available, narrowing down what you want to do for the rest of your life can feel overwhelming. As a young woman, there can be certain challenges that come with careers which makes the decision even harder.

If you are unsure where to begin your career, here are the top five job options for women who don’t know what they want to do after college.

Entrepreneurship

Starting your own business is a great option for women who don’t know what they want to do for work. It allows you the freedom to set your own hours, be your own boss, and create something all on your own. However, entering the world of entrepreneurship as a woman, especially a younger woman, can come with a lot of challenges. It can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling employment option, but you need the right tools to get started.

Keep in mind that starting a small business takes time, and you may not see the results you want right away, but don’t let this discourage you. Especially right after college, many people cannot afford to drop everything and invest all of their time and money into starting a new business, so lots of women keep their day jobs while developing their companies. What is most important is that you remember to stay confident and believe in yourself and your ideas. If you believe in your own success, other people will trust you and your product or service.

When you start your own business, it is helpful to reach out to other female entrepreneurs, either in your area or online. There are lot’s of online groups for female business owners, or you can reach out to local businesses for advice, and professional relationships. Building a network of female entrepreneurs will help you throughout the growth of your business, and gives you a place to go for advice and reassurance.

Human Resources

People either make or break a company, and as a human resources professional, you will play a huge role in the success of the business you work for. Human resource management is essential for any company whether it is large or small, and your role would be to basically manage the employees of the business to achieve better performance. For example, you will likely be in charge of people, but this can be more complicated than it sounds.

Hiring is an intricate process, and you need the skills to choose individuals who are going to fit within the culture of the company and remain at the business for a long time. Hiring people who align with your company’s goals and work ethic will go a long way in ensuring that the company is productive and employees are happy, motivated, and will work there for a long time. Human resources is a great career if you enjoy having responsibility, overseeing the work of others, and want to help improve the success of a company.

Interior Design

Do you have a creative mind, and enjoy decorating spaces to make people feel happy and comfortable? If the answer is yes, you may want to consider a career in interior design. If your friends and family are always complimenting the way you decorated your own home, it could be a sign you have a talent for designing homes. Interior design is a profession that focuses on creating cohesive and aesthetically pleasing designs and planning for homes and businesses.

That being said, just because you personalized your own space does not mean those skills would translate well into designing for other people. Having a well developed personal style can sometimes mean it is difficult for you to translate your skills into creating something for someone else. Before deciding to dive headfirst into a career in interior design, you’ll want to do some self-evaluation.

You should also decide if your passion lies in just decorating, or in the design and planning of a space from scratch. Interior designers may often start their projects with nothing but an empty room to work with. If this is something that sounds exciting to you, you may be more inclined to become an interior designer than if you only enjoy the decorating aspect of designing a room.

You will also want to decide whether you are more drawn to designing commercial spaces or residential rooms. There is a huge difference between the interior design work that goes into an office or store and designing a home.

Media

Have people ever told you that you excel at communicating with others? Maybe you are really skilled at writing or have a good understanding of how social media works for businesses. Working in media is a growing industry, and can include a lot of different fields. Careers in media include advertising, marketing, public relations, writing, journalism, photography, and so much more. Many of these careers also provide a lot of room for growth and creativity.

Start by considering what your skills are. For example, if you are good at writing there are a lot of careers that go beyond just writing novels. Advertising and marketing agencies are always looking for people to write content for their clients, whether it be blog posts, advertisements, website content, and more. Getting your foot in the door at an agency as a writer, could eventually lead to higher positions in marketing or advertising that you never knew were possible. This is a great option if you aren’t sure what you want to do because you can learn more about the field while working there, and then make a decision to further your career in that field or move on to something else.

Another good example of this is journalism. Journalism is not just about researching and writing articles, however, this is a great way to get in with a company in hopes of moving up. When you start as a journalist or writer for newspapers, magazines, or any other form of media, you open yourself up to other career opportunities within that company. If you start out writing articles for a newspaper, eventually you could have the opportunity to become an editor. As an editor, you would be in charge of other writers, and you can make a lot of money depending on the company.

Psychology

A lot of women excel in communication, empathy, and listening, all great skills when working in the field of psychology. If you are going to school or deciding on a major, psychology is a great choice because it can lead to a successful and fulfilling career, but also because it teaches you a lot of “soft skills” that employers are always looking for. If you think you would be a good fit for a job in psychology, being a therapist is one of the best ways to use this education.

As a therapist, you would treat clients for a range of different mental health conditions. Some therapists specialize in certain treatments, focusing on a specific group of people or conditions. Some examples of therapist specializations include marriage and family, youth, addiction, school, trauma, social work, and behavioral therapy. If you feel passionate about helping any of these groups of people, or want a job that makes you feel like you are putting good back into the world, psychology is a great option.
