Boudoir photos are about celebrating the so-called imperfections that make us human. Whether you’re hoping to spice up a long-term relationship or just want to remember how your body looked during a certain period of your life, doing a boudoir session is a great way to do this.

Reasons to do a Boudoir Shoot

The thought of a boudoir photoshoot might make you feel awkward, nervous, and a little bit stressed out at first. But, before you throw up your hands in anxiety and run the other direction, hear us out.

Boudoir photos are a great way to celebrate your body and femininity, and they’re not as scary to take as you might think! Here are 7 reasons everyone should book a boudoir session at least once.

It’s a Time to Celebrate You

Unlike wedding photos or family sessions where there are multiple people involved, boudoir sessions are all about you. Boudoir photographer Betsy McCue shares that she loves getting to connect with her clients and explain to them that the session is much more than just taking flattering photos – it’s about showcasing who they truly are and celebrating them in ways that haven’t been done before.

This is a time when you, your body, and your personality get to shine and be highlighted in a set of images that you’ll be able to cherish for years to come.

Boost Your Self Confidence

Boudoir photography is all about self-confidence, which doesn’t come easy for everyone. It’s hard to feel beautiful when you don’t love your body, like when you feel as if you are overweight or too thin, or when certain parts of your body aren’t as toned as you’d like them to be. You might feel like you have to hide those parts of your body or never leave the house without wearing baggy clothing.

However, there’s no need to hide when you have boudoir photos taken of yourself! It’s all about embracing your body and loving the way it looks, even if it’s not what you imagine the “ideal” body to look like (spoiler alert: there is no ideal body!).

Plus, by showing off your body in the photos, you’re inspiring other women to do the same thing!

Showcase Another Side of Yourself

If you’re working a standard 9-5 job in an office, it’s safe to say that you’re not showing up to work wearing lingerie. Or, if you’re a stay-at-home mom, you’re probably not cleaning up after the kids while wearing a sultry, lacy outfit.

Spending an afternoon taking boudoir photos gives you a chance to showcase a different side of yourself that you (and your partner) don’t always get to see. So, trade in the button-up shirts and slacks for some lace and leather outfits!

This is also a good chance to showcase a more outgoing side of yourself. Perhaps you’re generally pretty reserved and not the center of attention – well, that all changes when you do a photo session where you’re the main subject!

Give Them to a Significant Other

While you can definitely just take these photos for yourself, sometimes it’s fun to get them done with the intention to share them with a significant other. You can surprise them with a singular print of your favorite photo, or if you have too many favorites, you can create an album.

This can be a fun way to show off your assets, attract attention from your partner, and add spice to your relationship. These photos can be great to give as a wedding gift, Valentine’s Day present, to someone for their birthday, or just because you feel like it!

Get Glammed Up for the Day

If you don’t do it for any other reason, do it so you have an excuse to get glammed up! Rather than just showing up to the session, taking the photos, and calling it a day, make a whole day out of it. This is a great excuse to get pampered!

Remember that in photos, you typically want to go heavier on your makeup for it to be noticeable (unless you are going for a very natural, non-makeup look). Rather than doing it yourself, why not get it professionally done by a makeup artist? The same goes with your hair – go to the salon and have someone else do it for you.

Can Buy New Outfits

Can you ever really have enough lingerie in your drawer? The answer is no. Plus, it’s always fun to wear new clothes during photoshoots! Scheduling a boudoir session is a justifiable reason to buy a few new lingerie outfits and a couple pairs of heels.

This is also a good chance to buy pieces that you haven’t worn before. Maybe garter belts attached to stockings is a foreign concept to you that you’ve always wanted to try, or perhaps you want to branch out and wear a color that you don’t typically have.

Remember a Season of Life

Before everyone owned a smartphone with a good-quality camera at their fingertips, photos were taken more sparingly and typically to remember significant moments or events. Even though pictures can be taken of pretty much any second of our lives now, a boudoir session can help you capture a specific season of your life.

It can freeze specific moments in time that you were proud of your body, felt empowered, and wanted to embrace everything about yourself. A few examples of popular times to do a session include:

  • On a birthday (specifically a milestone year)
  • When you’re engaged to be married
  • After having a baby and feeling proud of your body
  • When you hit a certain weight goal that you have been working towards

Final Thoughts

The key to getting these photos taken and loving them is to make sure you book a photographer you trust and feel comfortable with – this can make all the difference during the shoot. A boudoir shoot is a great gift to give yourself. Whether you have a significant other, or are doing it just for yourself, a boudoir shoot can be an exciting experience.
