How to write a resume: universal rules

Resumes are the most common and flexible form of self-introduction. It’s important that you don’t confuse it with other types of job application documents, like CVs, cover letters or motivation letters. Sometimes companies require one or two of these documents and sometimes all of them, so be sure to learn more about job application requirements before you get to writing your resume. Statistics say that on the average, HR specialists spend about 45 seconds to determine whether your resume has potential or not. So what do you have to do to get your employee interested?

  1. Your resume must be short and clearly defined; as a rule, it’s no longer than two pages. So even if essay writing is your forte, make sure your resume is as concise as possible.

Structure of resume

Any resume must have a strict format and is usually divided in three basic parts: personal details, education and qualifications information and work experience description.

The first part is, well, about your personal details. Your full name, birth date, address, email, phone numbers and any other contacts. Some employers also require a photo — you might want to ask if you need to add this too. Remember: there is no need to turn this into autobiography format. Only useful information.

Second part includes information about your education — which school, college, university etc. you attended, what kind of classes you took and any certificates relevant for the position you apply for. Here you can also provide some information about other skills you have (for example, Photoshop proficiency or photography or knowing foreign languages) and your personal interests (again, this information must be relevant for the company and the position you hope to get).

The last part describes all working experience you ever had. Be sure to include names of companies and job positions you had, but remember that if some of your previous work experience is not related to your dream job in any way, minimize information about such experience as much as possible. Your task is to show you have skills and/or experience required to take the position.

Another important thing to add to your resume is references. If you’ve already worked at jobs similar to the one you aspire for, good references may be a substantial bonus. In some cases it’s also recommended to attach a portfolio of works you’ve performed earlier (or provide a link to it, in case it can be found online).
